Essaouira is a port and tourist city located on Morocco’s Atlantic coast. Its seaside medina (old town) is protected by 18th-century ramparts, called the Skala de la Kasbah, designed by European engineers. Dotted with ancient copper cannons, the fortifications offer views of the ocean. With their powerful trade winds, the city’s beaches are ideal for surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.

Essaouira is an exceptional example of a late 18th-century fortified city built in North Africa according to the principles of European military architecture of the time. Since its founding, it has remained a leading international trading port, connecting Morocco and the Saharan hinterland to Europe and the rest of the world.
